Gather Essential Supplies

Gather the supplies you’ll need to clean your boat. The list includes:

  • A garden hose with access to freshwater or a pressure washer.
  • A marine boat wash for your specific boat type.
  • Long-handled and soft-bristled brushes.
  • Sponges and a chamois cloth.
  • A vacuum cleaner and a mop.
  • Boat wax or polish.

Rinse & Wash the Exterior

Park your boat on a trailer on an even surface with good drainage and spend a few minutes removing all your personal belongings from the craft before you start rinsing it. Ideally, you should rinse your vessel after every trip, especially if you boat in saltwater.

Use your pressure washer or a hose to rinse the boat, and then apply a boat washing solution to the exterior. Use a soft-bristled brush to gently scrub the surface and rinse the boat wash off before it dries. You’ll want to start at the top and work your way down.

Wipe down the exterior using a chamois cloth to prevent white spots from appearing along the boat’s surface.

Wash the Interior

To make your craft shine like new, you’ll also want to clean up the interior.

Use your mop or vacuum cleaner to remove dirt from the floor. A mild all-purpose interior cleaner can be handy while you’re cleaning your vinyl seats. Use a sponge for scrubbing the inside of the vessel and wiping off the dirt on glass and windows.

Wax & Give the Final Touches

Once your boat is dry, you’ll want to wax it. A good-quality marine wax will give it protection against dirt and debris and make it difficult for these substances to stick to your craft. It will also make your vessel gleam in the sunshine.

Experts recommend that you must wax your boat at least twice a year: once at the beginning of the boating season and once when you’re preparing to store it away for the winter.
