Seasickness Prevention Strategies For Boat Owners
It can strike when you least expect it: the feelings of faintness, nausea, and vertigo that signal a bout of seasickness, which is the term for motion sickness on the water. Many boat owners and their passengers have suffered from this malady, but fortunately, there are plenty of ways to reduce the risks of incurring seasickness on your next boat trip.
Don’t Drink Alcohol
Alcohol consumption already results in some similar effects to seasickness: nausea, dizziness, and headaches. So it makes sense to avoid drinking alcohol on a boat and even for a day or two before you get on a boat so that you don’t feel ill. Alcohol is also really dehydrating, which can make you lightheaded.
Eat Lightly & Stay Hydrated
You might think that avoiding food before a boat trip will prevent nausea; in fact, hunger can just make it worse! Snack on some lighter foods while you’re on the boat, like saltine crackers, granola bars, and fresh fruit. Also, make sure that you stay hydrated with plenty of water and herbal tea.
Try Ginger & Peppermint
For centuries, people have used ginger and peppermint as folk remedies for nausea and a sour stomach. You can use them, too! If nothing else, a hot cup of ginger or peppermint tea can be very soothing. There are also ginger and peppermint candies if you’d prefer to suck on a hard candy for a while.
